Line Efficiency Explained: The Core Formula and Calculation

Line Efficiency is the single most important metric for measuring a production line’s performance. It tells you the percentage of your potential output that you actually achieved.

The formula used by the calculator above is based on comparing the Actual Production Quantity against the Target Quantity.

Line Efficiency (%) = (Actual Production Quantity / Target Quantity) × 100

1. Determining the Target Quantity

The Target Quantity is your theoretical maximum output. To find it, the formula first calculates the total available time for your manpowers, converting all units to seconds.

A. Total Available Seconds

This is the total effort you paid for, minus breaks.

Total Available Seconds = Manpowers × Working Hours × 3600

B. Target Quantity Calculation

This divides your total available time by the time it should take to make one piece (SMV in seconds).

Target Quantity (Pcs) = Total Available Seconds / SMV (in seconds)

Example: 10 manpowers × 8 hours × 3600 seconds/hr = 288,000 available seconds.
If the SMV is 60 seconds (1 minute), the Target Quantity is 4,800 Pcs.

2. Calculating the Final Efficiency

Once you have the Target Quantity, you calculate the efficiency by seeing how close your line came to that goal.

Line Efficiency (%) = (Actual Production Quantity / Target Quantity) × 100

Example: Actual Production Quantity = 4,000 Pcs
Target Quantity = 4,800 Pcs
Result: (4,000 pcs / 4,800 pcs) x 100 = 83.33% Efficiency
