However, just because you can input minutes, doesn’t mean you should.

There is a dangerous habit prevalent in merchandising and industrial engineering departments: thinking in rounded minutes. While the tool is now flexible enough to handle minutes, we still strongly recommend inputting SMV in seconds for maximum precision.

What is SMV in Garments?

Before we dive into the math of seconds versus minutes, let’s establish what SMV actually represents. SMV in garments is the standard time allowed for an operator of average skill, working at a normal pace, to complete a specific task or operation.

  1. Basic Time: The observed time taken to perform the task.
  2. Rating Factor: An adjustment based on the operator’s efficiency during the observation.
  3. Allowances: Additional time added for relaxation, machine delay, and bundle handling (usually between 10% to 20%).

The formula looks like this:

SMV = Basic Time + (Basic Time × Allowance %)

This value determines your production targets, your line balancing, and most importantly, your CM (Cost of Making). If your SMV is wrong, your price quotation to the buyer is wrong.


The “Minutes” Trap: The High Cost of Rounding

To a layman, time is fluid. To a garment manufacturer, time is rigid math. The problem with using “Minutes” as your primary input unit is the issue of decimals and rounding.

Let’s look at a common scenario. You have a complex jacket style. Your industrial engineers perform a time study or use GSD (General Sewing Data) and determine the SMV is roughly 25 minutes.

However, rarely is an operation exactly 25.00 minutes. It might be 25.43 minutes or 25.78 minutes.

The Rounding Error

Human nature prefers clean numbers. When a merchandiser sees an SMV of 5.53 minutes on a messy spreadsheet, they might mentally round it and input 5.5 minutes into the calculator for a quick cost estimation. It seems harmless. What is 0.03 of a minute?

  • 0.03 minutes = 1.8 seconds.

It sounds like nothing. But let’s scale this up.
If you have an order for 50,000 pieces:

1.8 seconds × 50,000 pieces = 90,000 seconds.

90,000 seconds is 1,500 minutes or 25 hours of production time.

If your factory running cost (CPM – Cost Per Minute) is $0.15:

1,500 minutes × $0.15 = $225.

You just lost $225 in pure profit because you rounded 5.53 down to 5.5 before entering it into the tool. While $225 isn’t a fortune, this is just one operation on one style. A garment has 20 to 50 operations. If you have rounding errors across the entire operation bulletin, you could be under-costing your garment by thousands of dollars per order.


The Logic: 5.5 Minutes vs. 330 Seconds

You might ask, “Your calculator now converts minutes to seconds automatically. So, isn’t 5.5 minutes exactly the same as 330 seconds?”

Mathematically, yes.

5.5×60=330.

But here is why we prefer you input Seconds:

1. The Input Source (GSD) is in Seconds

Modern SMV in garments is rarely calculated by stopwatch alone. It is calculated using PMTS (Predetermined Motion Time Systems) like GSD. GSD measures time in TMU (Time Measurement Units).

  • 1 TMU = 0.036 seconds.
  • 1 Second = 27.8 TMU.

When GSD software exports data, it usually provides a highly accurate minute value with 3 or 4 decimal places (e.g., 0.0456 minutes). Merchandisers invariably truncate these decimals.

By using the Seconds input option in our calculator, you are encouraged to look at the raw data. It is much harder to “accidentally” round 332 seconds to 330 than it is to round 5.53 to 5.5. The integer nature of seconds forces precision.

2. Avoiding “Lazy Estimates”

The flexibility of our new “Minutes” feature is designed for quick estimates. However, for final costing, reliance on minutes encourages “lazy estimates.”

If you select the Seconds option, you are subconsciously acknowledging that every second costs money.

  • Inputting Minutes: You might type “12.2”. (Actual time was 12m 14s).
  • Inputting Seconds: You are forced to calculate or look up the exact integer. 12m 14s = 734 seconds.

12.2 minutes = 732 seconds.
By using the decimal minute input, you lost 2 seconds per garment. On a 100,000 piece order, that is a $666 mistake caused simply by how you chose to input the data.


How to Use the Updated “Garment CM and Total Cost Calculator”

We have updated the tool to be more user-friendly, but to get the most accurate cost estimation, we recommend the following workflow.

Step 1: Choose Your Mode

When you open the calculator, you will now see an option to select your Input Unit:

  • Minutes (Good for rough, quick estimates)
  • Seconds (Recommended for final costing)

Step 2: Analyze the Operation Bulletin

Look at your Operation Bulletin (OB). Usually, the Industrial Engineering (IE) department provides the SMV at the bottom of the sheet.

  • Common Mistake: Taking the “Total SMV” which is often rounded to two decimal places (e.g., 15.45).
  • Correct Method: Look at the raw time data if available.

Step 3: The “Seconds” Workflow (Recommended)

If you select the Seconds mode:

  1. Convert your layout data: Minutes × 60
    • Example: SMV is 12.55 minutes. 12.55 × 60 = 753 Seconds.
  2. Input 753 into the calculator.

Step 4: The “Minutes” Workflow (Convenient)

If you select the Minutes mode:

  1. Ensure you are not rounding the input.
  2. If the SMV is 12.553, input 12.553.
  3. Do not round it to 12.5 or 12.55.
  4. The calculator will internally perform the math: 12.553 × 60 = 753.18 seconds.

Why the tool converts internally:
Our algorithm runs entirely on seconds. Even if you choose the Minutes option, the first thing the code does is convert your input into seconds. We designed it this way because the calculator assumes that every second costs money. By stripping the calculation down to the second, we ensure the math is precise.
